Living in Alaska has had an enormous impact on my photography. I don't claim to be the world's greatest nature photographer, but I do believe that I have a vision of the natural world that is worthy of sharing.
Alaska is by far the most beautiful place I've ever lived. Every day I am reminded that lots of people from around the world pay lots of money to visit the state, and the majority of them are confined to a schedule set by travel companies allowing them to see only a tiny portion of what I experience daily -- and I've only been able to see a small portion of what Alaska has to offer.
With incredible mountain vistas and our famous megafauna like bears, whales, and moose, you'd be forgiven for focusing your energy on the big picture. My first few years in Alaska were mainly spent fishing, with photography as a side benefit. Then I started photographing migratory birds in the spring and summer, and those resident avian species that were hardcore enough to stick around all winter.
The birds led me to smaller mammals and the incredible flora prominent in our short but intense summers. Photographing flowers and plants led me to turn my camera to insects and spiders -- some beneficial, others detrimental -- but all fascinating and all part of the greater ecologic web.
Although I do sell some of my imagery, I primarily shoot for myself. I try not to just document what I see; I try to make images that explain as I learn what I'm seeing. Maybe I can give you a glimpse of what I find beautiful, hopefully in a new angle, or color, or action.
I'm not a scientist, never had a college class past basic biology and astronomy, so all my observations are just that, my observations. If I screw up an identification or something, please feel free to reach out and let me know (preferably kindly).
Otherwise, feel free to browse around. I hope you like the images. If you have any questions or comments, just hit me up on the contact page.
About me
I'm a retired military photojournalist with 40-plus years of writing and photography experience hoping for a third career as a horror writer. Look for my horror short stories “The Collector” and “The Intermediary” in 2026 from Graveside Press.
You can see more of my photography at my Adobe Stock or Getty Images account and you can purchase my art for your home at Fine Art America.
I live, work and play in and around Alaska where I photograph nature (while fighting mosquitoes) during the day and write at night unless my cats are asleep on the keyboard.
